New cityscape for the Isle of Dogs
Tue 13th Nov 2007

The design of a major new Community Park will be one of the main areas for discussion when the public consultation on the masterplan for Wood Wharf begins next week.

The consultation will begin with a public exhibition at Canary Wharf’s West Wintergarden on 19th November running through to 1st December inclusive.

Wood Wharf is one of the few significant sites on the Isle of Dogs yet to be brought forward for comprehensive redevelopment. The Wood Wharf Limited Partnership  – comprising British Waterways, Canary Wharf Group and Ballymore Properties – has worked with one of the world’s leading architectural practices, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, and landscape designers, Martha Schwartz Partners, to develop a masterplan for the site. This includes new homes including affordable and family homes, offices, shops and community facilities as well as a new Community Park – all set within a world-class cityscape.

The masterplan also aims to provide enhanced access to the waterspace with world class waterfront recreational areas, additional moorings and a new canal. There will also be a new high street with shops, cafes and restaurants running through the heart of Wood Wharf.

The Wood Wharf masterplan builds on the principles for development of the site established in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG), adopted by the local authority following previous consultation on the future of Wood Wharf undertaken by British Waterways in 2003.

As well as exhibition boards and architectural models showcasing the proposals for Wood Wharf, the public consultation event being held in the West Wintergarden includes a series of workshops being held in Canary Wharf and at George Green’s School in Manchester Road on topics relating to the future development of the site, which local people are encouraged to attend.

Damian Wisniewski, Chief Operating Officer of Wood Wharf Limited Partnership said: “Wood Wharf has the potential to deliver thousands of new homes and jobs for the Isle of Dogs and London. It will create a fully integrated mixed-use development which will enhance Canary Wharf’s reputation as one of the world’s most vibrant business centres.”

“We hope that local people will take the opportunity to contribute to the future of Wood Wharf by visiting the exhibition or taking part in one of our workshops. We are particularly keen for input into the design of the new Community Park. The views of local people are an important consideration for us as we take our plans forward.”
